About Spokane Mindful Mamas

Spokane Mindful Mamas was started in the Spring of 2008, because we saw a need in the community for a safe and comfortable place for parents to connect, support and educate each other.

Mission Statement

From preconception to graduation: the maze of mothering options can confuse even the brightest among us. Mindful Mamas is a forum, a support group, a clearinghouse of resources and information to guide you through your journey.

What to expect at a meeting

Please be aware that one of our small members has a nut allergy, and we ask that all foods and snacks brought to meetings be safe, since even being touched after someone has eaten nuts can be dangerous. See this blog post for more information, including a handy label reading guide to nuts.

Joining a new group can be intimidating if you do not know what to expect, so this is just a rough outline of how the meetings generally go. Out of respect for each other, we do ask that once the meeting begins, that the focus should be on the member asking a question or giving support. Due to the acoustics of the studio, it is just too hard to hear when there are so many people speaking.

We begin each meeting by introducing ourselves, and usually our children. Sometimes this goes quickly and we move into breastfeeding support, but occasionally we hear a new birth story, or meet a new family. Fathers are always welcome at Mindful Mamas, and often their perspective is refreshing.

Breastfeeding support is offered at each meeting, and we are fortunate to have a team of trained breastfeeding experts to answer questions. Many of the moms in the group have also breastfed, and have first hand advice for the unique challenges of breastfeeding. We strive to be a nonjudgmental group where all mindful parents are welcome, and many of our mothers also have experience with bottle feeding, so bring those questions as well.

Once the breastfeeding questions have been addressed, we often open the floor to members who have questions, frustrations, tips or a resource to share. One of the wonderful things about the group though is that we are flexible, and we are continually surprised at the wealth and breadth of knowledge that our Mama's have to offer. We want to stress that respect is key to these discussions. Parenting is full of very emotional decisions, so please be kind to each other.
